NASA doesn’t have a system to put man into space since the shuttle was retired few years back. But they are working on it. In fact, the upcoming SLS rocket system is designed to take astronauts all the way to Mars.
To reach that far, the rocket system is being made to be the most powerful rocket ever launched. Powered by up to a maximum of five RS 25 engines, the rocket system will have a lift capacity of 130 tonnes.
This video shows the test of one such RS 25 engine that burnt for a total of 535 seconds, consuming more than 567,000 litres of liquid oxygen and more than 227,000 litres of liquid hydrogen. Obviously results are impressive!
Bonus fact: The RS 25 engine is the one that was used on the Space Shuttles and is one of the most reliable liquid rocket engine in the world!
